Read, Read, Read

I paid a steady stream of late fees to my library this summer.  They love me.  Best intentions, pile of books, never enough time, ‘nough said.  But I did make it through a significant slew of wonderful words.  The titles (now updated on my Book Review page) are as follows:

Books I Like a Lot:

Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin.  Middle Grade.  I’m jealous.  I’d hate her for her talent if I hadn’t met her.  In real life, she’s really nice.

Heist Society by Ally Carter. Young Adult. I read the second book in this series, Uncommon Criminals (A Heist Society Novel), first.  Maybe because of this, I liked it better than the first book.  That being said, both are fresh and sharp.  Worth a read!

I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have To Kill You by Ally Carter.  Young Adult. Ummm….addictive.  Embarrased to admit.  Made me wish I was sixteen again and going to a private school for spies.  Read in rapid succession the sequels Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy and Only the Good Spy Young.  I stayed up way to late for these quick, tasty reads.

Avalon High by Meg Cabot.  Young Adult. This book was developed into an average made-for-TV-movie (on the Disney Channel).  I picked it up out of curiosity and was so glad I did.  The book was so much better than the movie.  I always wonder what they (the movie people) think they gain by tweaking an author’s work.

Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate Dicamillo.  Middle Grade. My third grader read this in school and so, of course, I snagged it from her.  What an amazing book.  No wonder it won the Newberry Honor Medal.  The tone reminded me of books I used to read as a kid in the pre-Diary of a Wimpy Kid era.

The Pretties by Scott Westerfeld.  Young Adult.  Just as good as the first one in his series, The Uglies.  Waiting, biting my nails, until the library gets in the third.

Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool.  Middle Grade. Well deserved Newberry Medal winner.  Love that historical novels are getting their due credit.

November is National Novel Writing Month

It does sound a little daunting.  Write a complete novel in one month.  But competitive creativity is so much better when you’re not alone!  It’s worth a shot.  You never know what you’ll come up with.  Besides, the goal is simple: get the rough draft down on paper.  It’s the editing that will take the next eleven months.

Two of my neighbors and three of my writing partners have signed on.  Come join us!

To sign on, visit NaNoWriMo at:  http://www.nanowrimo.org/en

Acapella Anyone?

Interested in trying out for an acapella group?  I joined a very fun and low-key group called One More Round based in South Orange, NJ.  They are holding rolling auditions for a few vacant spots.  Send me a comment if you’d like more information.

About singing:  This doesn’t have anything to do with writing but everything to do with inspiration and personal growth moments.  I joined a newly created acapella group this past spring in an attempt to reconnect with what I loved as a “kid”.  So many of the activities in which I participated in high school and college were dropped when I entered the “real world”.  Years later, as I shuttled kids from one awesome activity to another, I found myself becoming jealous.  And it wasn’t just that they had these great things to go to, it was that they knew what they wanted to do.  So, I allowed myself a moment of introspection and realized that one thing I’d really like to do again was sing.  Once I made that decision, the fates aligned themselves.  I found One More Round, I tried out (scary!), and I got in (happy day!).  It hasn’t been easy – it’s been a long time since I’ve sung acapella.  But I love it.

If you’re feeling the same way, I challenge you to find that thing that makes you come alive again.  If you decide singing is that thing, drop me a line.  We’re always looking for new singers!

Update to the Book Review Page

I’m making my way through my summer reading list and recently finished the following:

Books I Like A Lot:

Matched by Ally Condie.  Young Adult.  I read several books about dystopian societies in a row and this one really stuck with me.  I’m looking forward to the sequel due out in November.

The Uglies by Scott Westerfeld.  Young Adult.  This was one of the most widely referenced books at the NJ SCBWI conference this past June.  I had to put a hold on it at the library, waiting my turn to take it out.  Now I understand why.
